Were these not called "slicks" in VN? I know UH1 was also called "huey" but
a Cobra Gunship captain that had several tours in VN told me they called
them "slicks" because they were clean on the outside. I guess the gunship
version of the UH1 was called something else?

He also went on to explain that they used "loaches" (Hughes 500) to
flush-out the enemy while the Cobras were up at 5000ft in a hover. Once the
loach would flush some enemy fire, the Cobras would push over into a dive,
get in range, then open up on them with the mini-gun.

The original designation was HU-1 (helicopter utility) and was changed
after the prototype was approved. Yes, D and H models were called slicks,
but like the helicopters of the time they get called by Indian names:
Cayuse, Mohave, etc. Did your AH-1 tell you they called the Cobra a snake?
